There isn’t a more brutal way ever invented to torture and kill a man than crucifixion. The word itself was rarely spoken in public because of the dreaded associations it carried. The Romans only used it to punish the worst of criminals and insurrectionists. So, imagine when Jesus begins to tell His closest friends that He will soon be the recipient of such cruelty. Such statements to them had to evoke confusion, turmoil and disbelief. How could this be? Well, this was the plan all along. Jesus’ quest was never to rule – never to overtake the Romans and become the new king of Israel. Jesus let His life go for you and for me. And He chose to do so in the most inhumane way ever devised by man. This is why Jesus is the true Hero.
